چکیده

A pseudo-Boolean function is a real-valued function f(x) = f(x1, x2, . . . , xn) of n binary variables; that is, a mapping from {0, 1}n to R. For a pseudo-Boolean function f(x) on {0, 1}n, we say that g(x, y) is a quadratization of f if g(x, y) is a quadratic polynomial depending on x and on m auxiliary binary variables y1, y2, . . . , ym such that f(x) = min{g(x, y) : y ∈ {0, 1}m} for all x ∈ {0, 1}n. By means of quadratizations, minimization of f is reduced to minimization (over its extended set of variables) of the quadratic function g(x, y). This is of some practical interest because minimization of quadratic functions has been thoroughly studied for the last few decades, and much progress has been made in solving such problems exactly or heuristically. A related paper [1] initiated a systematic study of the minimum number of auxiliary y-variables required in a quadratization of an arbitrary function f (a natural question, since the complexity of minimizing the quadratic function g(x, y) depends, among other factors, on the number of binary variables). In this paper, we determine more precisely the number of auxiliary variables required by quadratizations of symmetric pseudo-Boolean functions f(x), those functions whose value depends only on the Hamming weight of the input x (the number of variables equal to 1).

Quadratizations of symmetric pseudo-Boolean functions: sub-linear bounds on the number of auxiliary variables

The problem of minimizing a pseudo-Boolean function with no additional constraints arises in a variety of applications. A quadratization is a quadratic reformulation of the nonlinear problem obtained by introducing a set of auxiliary binary variables which can be optimized using quadratic optimization techniques. Using the well-known result that a pseudoBoolean function can be uniquely expresse...

On quadratization of pseudo-Boolean functions

We survey current term-wise techniques for quadratizing high-degree pseudo-Boolean functions and introduce a new one, which allows multiple splits of terms. We also introduce the first aggregative approach, which splits a collection of terms based on their common parts.

Quadratization and Roof Duality of Markov Logic Networks

This article discusses the quadratization of Markov Logic Networks, which enables efficient approximate MAP computation by means of maximum flows. The procedure relies on a pseudo-Boolean representation of the model, and allows handling models of any order. The employed pseudo-Boolean representation can be used to identify problems that are guaranteed to be solvable in low polynomial-time. Resu...

Symmetric approximations of pseudo-Boolean functions with applications to influence indexes

We consider the approximation problem of a pseudo-Boolean function by a symmetric pseudo-Boolean function in the sense of weighted least squares. We give explicit expressions for the approximation and provide interpretations and properties of its L-statistic representation. We also discuss applications of these expressions in cooperative game theory and engineering reliability.

Algebraic Properties of Modular Addition Modulo a Power of Two

Modular addition modulo a power of two, is one of the most applicable operators in symmetric cryptography; therefore, investigating cryptographic properties of this operator has a significant role in design and analysis of symmetric ciphers. Algebraic properties of modular addition modulo a power of two have been studied for two operands by Braeken in fse’05. Also, the authors of this paper, ha...
